Brushstrokes of the Wild: Capturing Majesty in Progress
Here I share current works in progress, explore chosen subjects, and discuss the techniques and materials I’m developing—this year, focusing on wildlife art in mixed media and oil on canvas.
I’m currently working on a series of studies to refine my approach, experimenting with colour, surface, and texture to bring more presence and atmosphere to each piece. These smaller works are part of my preparation to begin a large-scale “Big Five” painting, which will be released as a Limited Edition print. Creating this piece has been a long-held goal, and I finally feel ready to give it the focus it deserves.
The “Big Five” – Elephant, Rhinoceros, African Buffalo, Lion, and Leopard – were once seen as the ultimate trophies for colonial-era hunters. But the narrative is changing. Where once these animals were “bagged” with rifles, they are now more ethically captured through photography, painting, and conservation storytelling.
From Trophies to Guardianship: Art as a Voice for the Voiceless
Many of these species are now on the IUCN endangered or vulnerable list, facing population declines due to poaching, habitat loss, and climate pressures. As someone raised in South Africa, I am firmly against trophy hunting and all forms of wildlife exploitation. My work honours the strength and beauty of these animals, not their conquest.
A portion of the proceeds from the Big Five Limited Edition prints will be donated to wildlife conservation charities working to protect these extraordinary species for future generations.
